Crowns & Bridges

Crowns & Bridges

What are Crowns & Bridges?

Both crowns and bridges are essential for restoring your smile and improving the functionality of your teeth. Crowns are able to protect an existing tooth that’s been compromised while simultaneously restoring function to that particular area. A bridge is different in that it replaces a missing tooth. The bridge is attached to surrounding teeth and the middle tooth, known as the pontic, replaces a tooth that has fallen out or been extracted.

Why are Crowns & Bridges needed?

Crowns are needed if a tooth has been compromised. A dental crown might be necessary if a tooth has broken, cracked or fracture or if it’s recently had a root canal. A dental bridge might be necessary if a tooth has been removed or has fallen out on its own. The bridge replaces the missing tooth without the need for surgery or more invasive dental procedures.

What makes you a good candidate for Crowns & Bridges?

Both crowns and bridges require absolutely no surgery to place. The procedures are done quickly and easily in our office in about an hour. You’ll need an exam and consultation before having either a crown or bridge placed. Most people who need a crown or a dental bridge are good candidates for the procedure.

What can you expect with the Crown & Bridge procedure?

You’ll first come in and receive a local anesthetic to the area requiring the crown or bridge. For the crown procedure, just the one tooth is filed down to create an abutment for the new restoration. For a dental bridge, the two surrounding teeth are filed down to properly sit the new bridge. Impressions are taken of the area and used to make both a temporary as well as a permanent restoration. You’ll go home with a temporary bridge or crown and will need to come back in to have the permanent one placed. The bite and fit of your new permanent restoration is adjusted and you’ll be ready to go home. Both bridges and crowns can last for years or even decades with proper care.
