Root Canals

Root Canals

Root canals help to save the tooth from being completely removed through extraction. Root canals are typically done on compromised adult teeth as a way to save the overall structure of the tooth.

What are Root Canals?

A root canal is necessary when the pulp of a tooth has become infected or exposed. The pulp, sometimes referred to as the nerve of the tooth, can become compromised if decay is allowed to reach the center of the tooth or if the tooth has cracked, broken or fractured. Root canals help in saving the overall integrity and structure of the tooth while simultaneously removing the infected pulp. Most often, a pulp will become severely painful or sensitive if a root canal is needed.

What makes you a good candidate for Root Canals?

In order to determine if a root canal is needed, you’ll need to come in for an exam and series of x-rays. This can help us to decipher if the inner pulp has been infected or exposed and requires a subsequent root canal. Most patients who need a root canal are good candidates for the procedure. Root canals require no surgery and are often done in under an hour.

What is involved during a Root Canal?

You’ll first receive anesthetic to make the procedure as comfortable as possible for you. The tooth is isolated from the rest of the mouth using a rubber dental dam. We will then use a drill to go into the tooth and expose the pulp. The pulp is completely removed using specialized techniques and a series of tools. The canals of the tooth will then be filled with a special medicated material. Once finished, the tooth is filled with the same composite resin that is used for fillings. The composite is hardened with a curing light and you’ll be ready to go home.
